Lattimore eliminates Tar Heels from his list

Marcus Lattimore. (Jeff Blake/jblake@thestate.com)

Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes’ Marcus Lattimore, No. 1 in our S.C. Top 25 and considered by many the top running back in the country, has dropped North Carolina from his list of schools.

“He wanted to trim his list to five, and the Tar Heels were the team that he cut,” said Byrnes athletic director Bobby Bentley moments ago. “Now he’s down to South Carolina, Penn State, Auburn, Georgia and Oregon.”

Bentley did not offer a reason why UNC got the axe, but Lattimore’s loss was a huge blow to the program, which—like South Carolina—is in dire need of a game-changing running back.

Lattimore, who has scheduled visits to Georgia and Oregon in January, has been to South Carolina unofficially many times, and it was thought that he might visit the other five officially. Now with the Tar Heels out of the picture, he can take an official to Columbia as well.

Never qualify at UNC. They really had not pursued this guy hard over the last few months.

Mustafa Greene from Irmo is a better back. He looks to be headed to NC State.

Never qualify at UNC...please! Its funny with you Tarholes, every recruit you don't get is seemingly because you "didn't pursue" them...nobody is buying that crap. Greene is not a better running back so says anyone in scouting. Marcus will be a Gamecock because he wants to play Big Boy football and doesn't want to be associated with the pathetic ACC. Greene is from Columbia and USC has no interest in him so whats that say?

If I wanted to play 'Big Boy' football I don't think I would go to SC, I don't remember the last time they mattered in the SEC

Well, theres no ACC schools left on his list and you could probably say the same for the rest of the top recruits. No, SC is not UGA, Florida or Bama, BUT we put 80,000 in the stadium every week and a steady stream of players into the NFL. The gap between the SEC/ACC is huge and getting bigger as evidenced by a 3-5 SC team and a 4-4 UGA team stomping mudholes in your conference champions. In my opinion, the ACC is THE elite basketball conference in the country but you got a long way to go in football.

You are correct Southern Cal has no interest in him. You gamecocks are so funny. You are the laughing stock of the SEC.

But the fact is, we dominated the sorry Wolfpack two years in a row (3 total points in two games) and beat the TarHoles in their high school stadium the last time we played. Even probably your best team, Clemson, just took a beating from us. Yeah, we struggle in the SEC but one thing is for sure, we don't struggle with you guys.

To the genius that said he would never qualify at N Car. Are you aware that NCar has a player on their roster that got denied from Clemson? Thought so.

Marcus Lattimore is not only an amazing football player, but a great student and wonderful person altogether.

Those that spew crap on here know nothing about him. They just choose to say "NC stopped recruiting him."

He has a sister at USC, which is a big plus for them. And no, I am not a Gamecock fan. I am a UK grad.

As for the laughing stock of the SEC? While USC may be a middle of the road SEC team, that is at least better than being a crap ACC team. When is the last time NCar mattered in the ACC? Enjoy the Tire Bowl AGAIN morons.

I'd love Lattimore to go to South Carolina but I could see him going to any of the other schools as well. I think this past year South Carolina has shown that if you come up to play as a freshman, you can start over any returning player.

And for those who say losing Lattimore isn't a big deal for the Tarheels is oblivious. Unlike three or four star recruits, five-star recruits frequently become big names in college football and there are fewer and fewer overrated 5 stars out there.

USC won the rivalry game with Clemson for the 3rd time this decade and the 5th time in the last 20 years or so. I'd say win a few more before you start beating your chest about not struggling with them. Didnt USC leave the ACC because they didnt want to raise their academic standards past a JUCO level?

UNC isn't really an academic powerhouse, so it's kid of silly to argue about academics. If you are from in-state, it's not hard to get into UNC. Sure, UNC is harder to get into out of state than USC is, but UNC is maybe the fourth or fifth best school in the ACC, so there't no need to get so high and mighty about it. Sounds a lot like most of UNC's athletics, just above average. At least you can hang your hat on men's basketball and women's soccer.

We absolutely struggle with Clemson, but my comment was directed more at Tobacco Road. The days of struggling with scrubs like that are over. It hasn't always shown in their record but Clemson year in and year out has as much or more talent than anyone in the ACC so, eventhough its frustrating, theres no shame in losing to them. If we lost to UNC, Duke, NCSU I would throw up because bottom line is you guys suck. Yeah, we left the ACC and now are in a superior conference because of it.

First off...it's Tar Heels (two words). Second, I don't know the kid and he may be a great student, but the fact is, it's much easier to gain acceptance to SEC schools than ACC schools (let alone UNC, which is a highly above average academic institution). We have plenty of RB's and there was no guarantee he would get immediate playing time at UNC. From what I saw of his games, he's a good RB, but game-changing...I'm not so sure.

Man, unless its a degree from Duke or Vandy, one is worth no more in a job interview than the other. Each school has its own strengths and weaknesses. USC has the #1 International Business School in the country but if you want to be an engineer, go to Georgia Tech. You guys act like you're Ivy League schools, but then again, you play football like they do so who knows. I will agree with you on one thing though, Lattimore looks really good, but I don't think he is a Spiller type.

He is not a Spiller-type at all. He is much more of an all-around, every down type back. I wish he would put up Spiller type numbers though.

Unless you are Duke, Vandy, Notre Dame, Stanford, etc, getting ATHLETES into ANY school is not hard. Are you NCar fans trying to assert that Rasheed Wallace would have been accepted to NC had he not been a stellar basketball player?

To sit here and posit that the football players at UVA, USC, UNC, UGA etc are held to the same academic standards as "normal" students is laughable at best, and delusional at worst.

Lastly, Marcus Lattimore would come and and start day 1 at USC and UNC. Neither team has a back like Lattimore at this point in time.

Bottom line is, the athletes are not the academic core of any university. Frankly, I have no problem with a 2.0 GPA if he can run a 4.4 40 yard dash. A lot of these kids god given abilities are athletic and not academic, but that does not mean they can't succeed in college.

Never qualified at UNC???? Now that's a joke...signed Dwight Jones, Greg Little, Marvin Austin, Donte Moss, Tydreke Powell, and Aleric Mullins....All he needs to do at UNC is take a summer online course and he would get in like the rest of these clowns....
