Tar Heels land all-American OT T.J. Leifheit

Wilmington Hoggard offensive tackle T.J. Leifheit, the No.6-ranked player on The Observer’s NC Top 25 Prospects list, has committed to North Carolina.

Leifheit, who had several dozen offers, picked UNC over fellow finalists Tennessee and Southern Cal, committing during a meeting with Tar Heels coach Butch Davis on his official visit to Chapel Hill Sunday morning.

Tennessee really came on strong at the end,” Hoggard coach Scott Braswell said a few minutes ago. “But I think he just really had a strong relationship with the coaches at North Carolina. And we have three guys (fellow Hoggard players) up there, and I think that contributed to his decision. He just felt comfortable there.

“Also, Carolina offensive line coach Sam Pittman took over his recruitment, and the two of them had built a good relationship.”

Asked about Leifheit’s strengths, Braswell said, “He’s just a big kid with good feet and a good work ethic.”

His commitment is a huge boost for UNC, which had been off to a slow start in building its class of 2010. Now Leifheit, who is 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds, joins fellow OL recruits James Hurst and Johnnie Farms, all three of whom are preparing to enroll for the spring semester, in addressing the program’s biggest need—O-line depth and talent.

Word of UNC's demise was greatly exaggerated....especially on here!!! Hate on haters!!!

No hating, just the facts. And the fact is that this is a major and very necessary catch for Butch and the boys...

The facts is that UNC gets Top 10-caliber talent year after year and is STILL mediocre and vastly overrated.

6-6 this year for the Heels, no bowl.

6-6 would get them to a bowl jackass...

and the top 10 talent has only recently started... it takes time to build up what was lost when Mack left...

they'll get there.

Actually 6-6 will not get a bowl this year because you only get to count one Div 1AA win, meaning they have to go 7-5 to qualify for a bowl.

But I think they can do that and you're right, there's only been one top-10 class since Mack Brown left (last year) and they had major losses from last year that take time to replace. They'll get there.

Roll on, heels.

Actually 6-6 wont get us in a bowl game this year big guy...

Did you notice we played a 2nd Div II team this past w/d.

Stop making excuses. Wake Forest does not get the top state talent coming out of high school, but they develop thier players and turn them into top talent. Wake goes to bowl games. It's what we do ... no excuses! Yeah that is right I am talking to you UNC.

Really hurts to write this story doesn't it. The Tar Heels getting a top recruit from NC. I thought only the Wuffies could recruit NC. Wait till signing day and let's count the stars. Go heels
And do not count us out for a bowl game yet.

Mr. Anon Y Mous
I do not care if Stan is a Morehead Scholar, he has hated on the Heels and Butch Davis recruiting and praised TOB and the Wuffies. The Distruber sports team has hated on the Heels for a long time and feel in love with the Pack.
Signing day yet to come. Look out.
Go Heels.
