Supposed Tar Heels' early commitment actually isn't

Fayetteville Westover LB Christian Russell has not committed to North Carolina, his coach said this afternoon.

Scout.com had announced Russell as the Tar Heels’ first junior commitment late this morning after talking to his mother, Bridgette.

“Christian has not committed to anyone yet,” said Westover coach Milton Butts. “He and his mother are going to take some unofficial visits and look at some other places. He doesn’t need to rush this.”

Butts was asked who was recruiting Russell.

“North Carolina was the first to officially offer, but he’s being recruited by most of the ACC schools, South Carolina and others like Colorado, Illinois and Ohio State,” he said.

Russell, who is 6-foot and 220 pounds, has 61 tackles through the season’s first six games at linebacker.

When Westover coaches decided they needed him as the starting RB as well, they began giving him more carries. In four games at the position, he’s gained 746 yards and scored 12 TDs.

“He’s been averaging almost 200 yards a game,” Butts said. “He’s a load, I’ll tell you.”

Translation: "UNC-CH's coaching staff, facilities, and fan support are awful. I'm going elsewhere after the UVA debacle." Go Duke!

I would imagine that most of UNC's football recruits will back out after successive losses to FSU, VT, Miami, BC, and NC State. It's going to get ugly in Chapel Hill.

So now the Tarheels are claiming an early commitment but then this info is refuted by the actual recruit? What is Butch Davis and UNC's staff doing? Implosion alert!

You've got to love Bob Lee's perspective. " FIRST (very important) - Butch Davis is NOT going anywhere any time soon. Butch is UNC Head Football Coach well into the 2nd decade of the New Millenium. ….. UNLESS Jimma Sexton finds a mindless fool who wins a state lottery, buys the Seattle Seahawks, moves them to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and needs a head coach that speaks Oklahomian.

LOL!

Wow... I've seen it all now. A dook fan just called out Carolina's football team. Duke has one ACC win in the last five years right?

Translation: HS coach doesn't like UNC and has been posting anonymous comments below.

Correction - above. yeah, dook football rules. I heard both fans were at the game saturday.

Hard to blame Scout for reporting that he committed. The story on Scout quotes his mother saying he committed on Monday night.

Sounds like Butts wants to get something out of the kid's recruitment.

Don't forget Dook's facilities. South Meck has a nicer looking stadium.

Butch went out and gave the dreaded "vote of confidence" to the OC. Kiss of death, correct?

Duke fan or not, there is no way UNC's OL can compete with FSU, VT, Miami, BC or State. It's tough to win with an offensive offense.

Translation: Not many high school coaches like Butch Davis' shady tactics.

While I am not the biggest supporter of Butch Davis (I actually preferred Paul Johnson), for a dook fan to come on here talking smack about ANYONE'S football program is completely laughable...as is the observer's coverage of UNC football recruiting. These idiots do realize signing day is a few months away right?

"Shady" tactics? You act as if he's Lane Kiffin and calling an opposing team's commits to brag about being competitive with them and still losing.

Oh my. Why even schedule LSU to start next season? The UNC staff is delusional.

Butch Davis should give Heel fans a refund! What a disgrace! This is NOT the Carolina way!

Anonymous said...

What is going on in here? STOP YELLING!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

This thread is outrageous and not indicative of the Carolina way! You miscreants return to your dwellings of leisure. Good day!

Ok so he rather go to UNC not Ohio State for football?

I'm not a Duke or Carolina fan. After watching the UVA game, the Duke guy can feel free to talk smack if he wants. Duke sure looked better Saturday than UNC!

Duke put up 26 points and barely lost to the ACC's best team.

UNC put up 3 points and got embarrassed by the ACC's worst team.

Duke 2-3 (0-1)

UNC 3-2 (0-2)

Not seeing a huge difference between these programs.

Duke's three losses are also to #5 VT, #16 Kansas, and the defending FCS National Champion.

This is another kid. I think I'm going to commit to UNC soon. I'll see you on the field, Duke.

this kid may want to reconsider. theres a very good chance that butchie wont even be a head coach when he graduates in 2 more years. lol, i love seeing these tarhole fans trying to figure out where it all went wrong.

Yeah but he'd play unc basketball if royboy wanted him. unc football is a joke.

^ spoken like a true UNC fan

Like I said, traditionally one of the worst, if not THE worst football program in DI talking smack to anyone is laughable. Of course, everyone else in the country has spent years laughing at your joke of a team, fanbase, facilities, etc....so dookies feel free to join in on the laughing fun. Just remember, most of the country is laughing at you, not with you.

just wait till basketball season

Hahaha Duke can talk all the smack they want. They sit SQUARELY above the lowly Heels in the ACC standings.

State will own the Heels again.

Duke > State > Heels

Still waiting on that elusive ACC win, Holes?
