South Carolina offers ninth-grader scholarship

How’s this for grabbing early attention?

Shaq Roland, who is finishing his freshman year at Lexington (S.C.) High, was offered a scholarship this morning by South Carolina. It didn’t hurt that Roland was all-region as a ninth-grade free safety, leading the Wildcats in interceptions and finishing fourth in tackles.

The Gamecocks are looking at him as a big cornerback or a safety. He’s already 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, and will likely start at QB next season for Lexington. Roland was also a dominant scorer in basketball, leading the Wildcats to a regional title.

“He’s the best young athlete I’ve seen in a long time,” said Lexington defensive coordinator Rocky White. “I think he’s currently rated the best ninth-grade basketball player in the state.” –Stan Olson
