We’ve been concentrating on the Class of 2010, but every now and then someone younger pops into view with a splash. Someone like Spartanburg Dorman’s Charone Peake.
Peake was a sophomore this past season, making him a junior next fall and a member of the recruiting class of 2011. Rising juniors are rarely offered at this point; Peake, though, has already been buried under a pile of would-be scholarships.
So far, Georgia, Clemson, South Carolina, Maryland, Kentucky and Vanderbilt have offered, with dozens of other schools apparently preparing to.
It’s not hard to see why. Charone is a 6-foot-4, 190-pound wide receiver with 4.4-second speed in the 40-yard dash. Dorman coach David Gutshall was so impressed that Peake started for the varsity as a freshman.
“The first four passes he caught, he turned into touchdowns,” Gutshall said a few minutes ago. "He is big-time, the whole package. Next year he should be one of the top recruits not in the state, but in the country.”
Stay tuned. We’ll keep you posted. Expect to see Peake high on our S.C. Top 25 Prospects list as he approaches his senior year. –Stan Olson
