Observer Position Review: Carolinas' Quarterbacks

Each day this week, The Observer will rank the top five prospects in the Carolinas by position as we track their recruiting. Today brings us to the players everyone’s watching, the quarterbacks. It’s not a great year in the Carolinas for QBs, but there are some solid players, all of whom are members of their state’s Observer Top 25 prospects list. If you have a question or think of a player we’ve missed, email me at solson@charlotteobserver.com

QUARTERBACKS

1/ANTHONY BOONE, Weddington: Our No.12 prospect in N.C., Boone is a muscular 6-foot-1, 226-pound QB who has shown off a strong and accurate arm at several combines. He’s already committed to Duke. As a junior, he threw for about 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns, and ran for 500 more yards. He can scramble; he has 4.8-second speed in the 40-yard dash.

2/TYLER BROSIUS, Waynesville Tuscola: A big bodied (6-3, 230 pounds), pro-style QB who is drawing interest from a number of schools, including East Carolina, Central Florida, N.C. State, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Wisconsin and Western Carolina. He threw for 2,356 yards as a junior, with 27 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.

3/GABE HENDERSON, Southeast Raleigh: Henderson passed for 2,301 yards and 20 TDs as a junior, both school records. But he’s a dual-threat QB, and ran for 900 yards and nine scores. Measured at 6-1 and 181 pounds, Henderson runs a 4.8 40 and has a 32.5-inch vertical jump. Schools interested include Duke, Kent State, N.C. State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake.

4/EllIOTT ALFORD, Bennettsville (S.C.) Marlboro County: Likely the best QB in S.C., Alford is drawing interest from Georgia, Illinois, LSU, North Carolina, Oregon and South Carolina. While he is a pro-style player, he can also scramble with his 4.8 speed. Threw for more than 2,500 yards as a junior.

5/STEPHEN CURTIS, Sumter (S.C.): Last season Curtis, a pro-style QB, passed for 2,372 yards and 23 TDs with 11 picks. He also used his 6-3, 205-pound size efficiently on the ground, rushing for 418 yards 10 scores. Among the schools paying close attention to him are Duke, Furman, LSU, Maryland, UNC, N.C. State, Oregon, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

TOMORROW: Defensive Linemen

Though not a Senior this year....Butler has a great QB. He already has several offers & there was a feature article on him already. I saw him play last season. He's definitely fun to watch & will no doubt go to a BCS team when he graduates next year.

Boone had a less than spectacular season last year. Shown up against Monroe. If he is as great as everyone says, why didn't Weddington win more? College recruiters will learn that size doesn't equal everything.

We may never know how good he really is. He will go from a crappy high school team to a crappy college team. He is a great athlete with a strong arm but he has had nothing to work with at Weddington. The drop back to 3A should help him some.

Please stop all the comments about Butler's QB... It is just a bunch of hype over not too much.

I can't beleive you guy's left out a QB with 4,000 yards passing and over 800 yards rushung with 50 plus TD's. Independence QB Anthony Carrothers! You guy's get stuck on size but no other other QB in the state and very few in the nation accomplished what he did this past season. He was named the National Old Spice player of the year and will break many NC records before it's all said and done. The Guy also runs a 4.5 fourty on a bad day! He can make all the big throws and when his receivers are covered he can crank it up and take it the distance for 6 points. Just ask Butler.

I think we still forget about the kid from Northwest Cabarrus - Jeremy Cannon. He had a injury last year. The kid has started since a freshman and lost to Catholic before the State Championship game. No quarterback in the area comes close to this kid. His freshman stats were better than these kids stats (Boone, Lemay, Carrothers, Tyler) in their Sophomore and Junior seasons. The whole world will know about Jeremy Cannon in August.

Carrothers missed six games his sophomore season due to injury and he still passed for 2,100 and 18 TD. He rushed for 5 more. So let's not get to carried away with saying the kid from Northwest Cabarrus is better than Carrothers. He also played for a team that ran the wingT his freshman year and still was able to pass for 1,000 plus yards and 12 TD's.

I don't think the Charlotte paper has a clue who are the best in SC football. They previously loaded the top 25 in SC with Byrnes players ignoring a lot of others who are better prospects than some of the Byrnes guys. Murden, Jones, and that Boiling Springs Qb are some qbs that are as good or better than the ones listed here. Even Chas Dodds of Byrnes deserves a look because of being overshadowed by Lattimore.
