Independence RB Nyjee Fleming, a 5-10, 186-pound junior, is already receiving offers from major area schools.
“I have offers from Virginia and Clemson and N.C.State," he said following the Patriots’ 35-32 victory at Rock Hill South Pointe Friday.
Watching him, you can see why—Fleming is an intriguing combination of shiftiness and speed. He finished the game with 122 rushing yards on 14 carries, including a 2-yard burst for Independence’s final score.
Fleming and teammate Adrian Gamble burst on the scene over the summer, when both were offered scholarships by Virginia after attending a Cavaliers’ camp. Gamble, a wide receiver who made a fine TD catch Friday, accepted that bid shortly after.
Fleming is keeping it open for now. But he’s proving that Virginia’s early offer was no mistake.
Ken Tysiac has covered the ACC in the Raleigh Bureau of The Charlotte Observer since 2003. He spent eight years in South Carolina covering Clemson, first with the Anderson Independent-Mail and later with The (Columbia) State. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1991.
