Butler RB Walker will soon move into elite recruit status

Butler High RB Deion Walker is just beginning his junior year, but major college programs will soon be noticing him. Some already have.

Georgia, Clemson and North Carolina have been in touch so far.

“That’s all right now,” Walker said after scoring three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 35-14 victory over Winston-Salem Mt. Tabor Friday night. Asked if he had a favorite, he said, “I like Georgia a lot.”

A lot of schools will soon be liking Walker. After a strong summer in the weight room, he’s 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, and he ties that to outstanding 4.36-second speed in the 40-yard dash.

“Deion is strong as an ox, and he has abs on top of abs (abdominal muscles)," says Butler coach Mike Newsome. “Last year he didn't have confidence in his hands and he dropped some balls, but we've been working on that. And he's simply a speed demon.”

Walker did lose a fumble Friday, but he converted enough critical plays to make that play forgettable, capping his evening with a 23-yard option pitch around the right side to make it 28-0.

Walker got a lot of work because fellow RBs Markel Moore (hyperextended knee) and Jawaun Edwards (high ankle sprain) were sidelined. He won’t get that much PT in the future, at least not this year.

But Friday was a good start.

4.36 at 190lbs??? I wonder if Christian's awesome linebackers could handle that? NOT!!!!!

the only way those white boys could catch Deon is on a motorcycle
but yet they are ranked #1 again. Butler beats the number 7 ranked team in the state in 4A - DEFENDING STATE CHAMPS 35-0 with their starters and Christian beats a team by the same score that is made of a bunch a home school kids that have a quarterback who could even win a starting spot at Porter Ridge two years ago when they went WINLESS!!!!!!

All 3 of Butler's RBs deserve to go big time. Charlotte Christian has 3 starting LBs going to college. At least 10 players from Butler will go to college.

40 yard dash times are in the eyes of the beholder. 4.36 means he probaly challenged for the state 100 meter title, right? Not...Mount Tabor is not defending champs, hasn't gone far in the playoffs in recent history.. Lastly, what does "getting attention" from colleges mean? Seems the Butler coaches spend more time announcing college interest (every other day Lemay gets a new offer) than coaching. Not the way to catch up to Indy, which beat them 49-7.

I think when you put everthing together- great coaching, great players and a will to win- Butler will be just fine. I do think that their LB's are really underated. And that # 5 is fantastic!! He plays both sides of the ball. But make no mistakes, they will have to prove how good they are all season long. Coach Newsome will have them ready.

Stan Olson, do you read Sports Illustrated? They did a story really telling how colleges send out literally thousands of letters and posters every day to high school players on a daily basis. Until they offer a scholarship, they are not really interested. By making a letter bigger than it is, you unfairly tag the player a failure when they don't get the scholarship some think is coming.

I don't think Mr.Olson did anything wrong by saying that there may be some colleges interested in this or any other player in any sport. I think it highlights what is going on in a school sports program. We would only here about the elite players if people like Mr.Olson only wrote about big name players. What is so wrong about that.
Keep running Deion and keep studying, you will make it.

Hey Anon, I read the SI story. And believe me, I can tell the difference between the thousand kids getting letters and the ones who have a shot at making it.
Watch Deion. He'll be one of the latter...
