Anthony Carrothers was named to the North Carolina Shrine Bowl last week, and I can’t think of a more fitting honor for a kid whose height will keep him from playing quarterback at the BCS level.
Carrothers has led the Patriots through a dramatic and undefeated senior season so far, but he’s 5-foot-8, and there are no 5-foot-8 BCS quarterbacks. So despite almost 2,000 passing yards and 17 TDs this season, Florida or South Carolina won’t come calling.
But at the prep level, Carrothers can play.
“I’m watching the TV highlights every Friday night and he’s saving their bacon,” Shrine Bowl head coach Jim Oddo with a laugh a few minutes ago. “I had no qualms about picking him; he’s an athlete. I had no qualms at all.”
The more Oddo saw of Carrothers, the more he liked.
“He reads pressure well, and when they break the pocket he scrambles so well that he can break a long one on you. He just plays the game well.”
Winston-Salem State has offered Carrothers and a lot of recruiters have looked at him, but there’s that height.
Don’t tell that to Oddo. He’s seen the kid play.

Glad it's not a racial thing, or is it??
Appalachian loves athletic high school qb's. Wouldn't mind seeing him in black and gold.
he can flat out play. just needs a chance at the next level. keep up the good work AC.
No, and that's a ridiculous assertion. Or do you see a lot of white, hispanic, and Asian QBs who go 5'8"?
Anthony Carrothers is a fine young man with dedication to the FSA - Family, Schoolwork, Athletics. He has good instincts on the field and, had he been blessed with 5 more inches of height, would be playing in D1. Keep striving for excellence young man, good luck vs. Butler Friday night, and congrats on the Shrine Bowl!
SAT,GPA
Russell Wilson at State was only 2* in high school because he was too small at 5'11". He was only player of the year his freshman year in the ACC. How do you measure heart or character?
There's some precedence to the notion that short quarterbacks can win at the division 1A level. With the increased usage of the shotgun offense, height isn't that importance. Look at Todd Reesing at Kansas or Chase Daniel at Mizzou. They've been(or was in Daniel's case) two of the top ten quarterbacks in the country over the past 3 or 4 years. Give this guy a chance!
Leak was not that tall and what did he do besides leave Florida to a national title and is from the same system as AC. Ac is playing is not playing with the same talent as leak or B.Cox but the stats look great. Give the young a try and see what happen.{big things come in SMALL package AKA Charlie Ward}
TRUE Charlie Ward and Doug Flutie is the best short QB's to play the game. But dont pass on AC if so it is you that cant measure up.
