Tar Heels add football commitment

Justin Meredith, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound tight end at Anderson (S.C.) Hanna, turned down more than 30 other scholarship offers to commit to the University of North Carolina.

Meredith already has accepted a spot in the UnderArmour All-America football game next spring. Clemson, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and LSU were among the offers he most seriously considered.

“He is your prototype tight end,” said Hanna coach Kenya Fouch. “He is a big kid with long arms who is quick and strong. He makes good grades and has good character. He is exactly what college coaches are looking for.”

Meredith was on the Hanna varsity as a freshman. The school has a strong football tradition and currently has graduated players on the rosters of Wake Forest, N.C. State, Kentucky and South Carolina.

Hanna was 7-6 in 2010 but lost three games to teams that advanced to the state championship game in their classification.

A. There's only one Carolina and it's in Chapel Hill.
B. 6:56 - that's an awful lot of revisionist history. You'd do well to stick to facts.

To the "0-4" ALL-CAPS guy:

Dude, nobody cares about State. Not even the NCAA (unfortunately, because I know first hand that they aren't running a squeaky clean operation in Raleigh, either).

And let's not conflate athletic academics and the academics of the student body at large. UNC is an elite public school and its reputation has (as it should) little to do with what a handful of jocks are up to. "And that's reality," to quote John Lennon.

11:48, I am afraid your "reality" is a facade. It seems everything is overinflated in Cheater Hill. See this article from your very own Daily Tar Heel. http://www.dailytarheel.com/index.php/article/2009/10/unc_grades_on_the_rise

UNC-Cheat, to seem rather than to be.

One more time, wouldn't want anyone to miss the reality of this "elite" public school. UNC-Cheat

I can't wait till UNC gets their punishment from the NCAA.

UNC acted immediately when there was possible violations in their program. They actually kept out kids who were innocent just to make sure. That's a big difference from Ohio State who's coach let his kids played and lied to the investigators to make sure he kept winning. I'll take UNC's program anyday since they policed themselves.

7:53am Delusional would best describe your current state. UNC made the media go to court to seek a release on what's suppose to be public records, they instructed Butch to act like one of the most unknowing idiots in the world to get off the hook, and appealed 3 players NCAA imposed sanctions. All the while calling the investigation an "inquiry" and describing a few "glitches" in their system. That's hardly doing it the "right" way. It's all spin.

The Admin. knows they cheated, the coaches know, the players know, their fans know...they are just trying to buy time to sweep it all up and put the best PR wash on it. They've got the media in their pocket as they are mostly UNC grads and are too scared to perform any investigative work or write an admonishing article on UNC.

UNC didn't pay their players, independent agents with no affiliation to the school did. So in the words of Mike Gundy "GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT"

The entire SEC cheats by over-signing classes every year. For example the gamecocks had 33 commits last year and lie and deceive these kids telling them they are going to play then they get shipped off to some military school to play for a year.

UNC-CHeat. The most corrupt athletics and administration in the NCAA. What a disgrace to a once proud institution!

to all the tarhole homers out there,

if UNC acted so diligently and took every measure to ensure that UNC, its coaches, its faculty, and its student athletes were all in compliance, why have the asst football coaches procured their own legal representation? why are they no longer relying on university counsel? why hasnt there been any response from UNC on the Coples issue? Why did UNC hire a NYC PR firm? why did they refuse to release phone/email records to the press? why did they appeal the ruling stating they had to release these documents? and the biggest question i have is where does this sense of arrogance that no one can question a UNC figure simply because all things "UNC" are above suspicion come from? get a clue, your time is coming and once you get knocked down a few pegs youll never be able to claim that undue superiority that you bestow upon yourselves.

For those who think UNC is this "elite" program, that's exactly why you guys think you're skating. If USC, any SEC school, Ohio State, Texas, etc. did the things that UNC has done then we would be seeing it constantly all over sportscenter. Notice how nobody cared with Marvin Austin was in trouble, but Marcel Dareus was a huge deal. What's been going on at UNC is a lot worse than the Ohio State situation, it's just not all out yet. Have you already forgotten about Black Santa? You guys still have a month or so to think you will be just fine. You can thank Coples for delaying that.

UNC will get thier just desserts. There is a lot more that is going going to come out and all the UNC applogists will be left looking pretty silly. I am sure Butch will manage to procure an NFL assistant possition and leave town before it gets too bad. Carolina is going to be in a shambles for a while. They are just trying to get their stadium done before the NCAA hammers them. When they reach the end of the appeal process trying to cover up what was going and the info is made public, there will be a bunch of people packing up thier offices...

Well well well....for all you haters the deed is done, the NCAA has completed and rendered findings and punishments. You poor Pack Priders along with your cohorts are going to HATE what you will see soon. I laugh when I read, "Just wait till you see what is coming and how they are going to get blasted!". On behalf of Tar Heel fans everywhere, let me thank ALL of you for the laughter you have provided to us during these proceedings. See you soon boys...and maybe in a Bowl Game..if YOU make it. BIG smile now everyone!
