Kannapolis athlete picks Heels

Kannapolis A.L. Brown athlete Damien Washington wasn't fazed by the turmoil surrounding the University of North Carolina football program and has given a commitment to the Tar Heels.

Washington plays slot receiver and running back for A.L. Brown and is 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. First-year A.L. Brown coach Mike Newsome said Washington obviously is aware of the changes and uncertainty at North Carolina after coach Butch Davis' firing July 27, but was ready to commit quickly after receiving a scholarship offer.

Newsome said Washington has always wanted to play at North Carolina. He is the first player to known to have given a new commitment (as opposed to re-affirming an existing commitment) to the Tar Heels and interim coach Everett Withers since Davis was fired.

"Kids are resilient," Newsome said. "They don’t always look at the probation stuff and all that. That’s where the kid wanted to go."

Although Washington didn't have any other Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offers, Newsome suspects that he would have received at least one more offer later in the recruiting calendar.

He said Washington's versatility is his strength; he's a natural receiver or running back who can play several positions.

"He’s a lot of different things," Newsome said. "He also can play defense. I think Carolina thinks he can come in and play corner or safety for them because he’s so athletic."

If he is real good, he won't go to UNC. WHEN THE SANCTIONS are revealed OCTOBER 28TH, Recruits are going to bail. They are lucky the suckered Marquise Williams and some other recruits when they told them it would all blow over and it's no big deal. Well it is a Big Deal and they will go down hard!!! These current recruits and future recruits are going to pay for some others actions. The NCAA will never change that!

any coach or parent that would let a kid they supposedly care about go to unc-cheat is pathetic-the kid wont even know how to read and write when he get out of that thug program. on top of that he will never get a chance to play in a bowl game-sshame on you newsome -get your tarheel homer glasses off and see unc-cheat football program for what it really is-THE DIRTIEST AND SCUMMIEST FOOTBALL PROGRAM IN THIS REGION

You're an idiot. Athletics is second to the school, sure the UNC program is flawed but it's still a great school and Washington will be your boss in about 6 years.

The football program may have a bunch of issues, but don't lump the whole unc athletic program as cheaters. The golfers, softball, rowing team, field hockey, even lacross teams are some of the pay-to-play sports. I know a former softball player at UNC and she said the coaches told them to stay away from the football team and not to get involved in the problems they were having........ so not everything is as it seems for the whole program.

To Anonymous at 9:01. Haha does not have a "q" in it. Wow, you are dumb. This kid will not be your boss, you have to have a job first to actually have a boss. Haha

Wow, from the comments above I guess no one is happy for the kid. Y'all are pathetic that you regard his scholarship as just another chance to spew venom...and so shame on you. The fact is,if he is a good kid, he will make the most of this opportunity and not screw it up by submitting to temptation.

Great choice!!! With what he will learn this year under Mike Newsom, he will be more than ready for that program! Good luck to him!!!

Brilliant choice, enjoy 2-3 bowl bans (assuming they win 6 games/year). Why hasn't the Disturber updated this "College Recruiting" section in 4 months??
